Aulacomnium palustre

English name: Bog bead-moss

An acrocarpous moss with pale, yellow-green leaves and ginger-brown, felt-like rhizoids that cover the stem. Occasionally, shoots terminate on an elongated stalk that holds a cluster of gemmae.

In Scotland, Aulacomnium palustre is widespread in moorland and heathland where it often grows on drier Sphagnum hummocks. BBS distribution map

Look out for Sphagnum fimbriatum, Sphagnum palustre and Sphagnum subnitens nearby.
