Overview

Agaricus augustus is a popular and choice edible mushroom that can be found in disturbed areas from late spring through the fall. Like many Agaricus species, it has a partial veil, free gills, and dark chocolate-colored spores that darken the gills chocolate-brown as the mushroom matures.

Other key characteristics include:

  •  Golden, scaly or fibrillose cap
  • Soft pink gills when young
  • Yellow-staining cap
  • Thin, skirt-like veil on stem
  • Textured stem below veil, smooth above
  • Growth in urban or disturbed areas, and near compost

Habitat: Agaricus augustus is most often found in disturbed, nutrient-rich, urban areas.

Edibility: The Prince is a choice edible mushroom common to urban areas. As with other commonly eaten mushrooms, test a small amount your first time trying this. Some people have had allergic reactions to nearly all edible mushrooms including Agaricus augustus

Identification: Most mushrooms in the Agaricus genus have free gill that turn chocolate-brown as the spores mature. Edible Agaricus species often have a sweet scent; inedible species have. an unappetizing chemical scent.
