Physarum cinereum is confused at naked eye with some groups of pathogenic fungi due to inhabit leaves of plants of agricultural interest, but it is not a pathogen organism (Agra et al., 2018).
Although to be a well distributed species, in Brazil this species need attention because many records are from endangered biomes. Thus, I suggest this species to be categorized in Least Concern
The specie is known in 79 countries, in Brazil it is known in 11 of 26 states (AM, AL, BA, PE, SE, DF, GO, MG, SP, PR and SC).
There are about 3101 records in 79 countries, 104 records are from Brazil distributed in 5 regions mostly in northeast.
Population Trend: Uncertain
In Brazil Physarum cinereum is found in Amazon and Atlantic Forest, rain and riparian forest, disturbed and preserved areas. The specie is usually found in living shrubs, lawns, weeds, grasses, cultivated turfgrasses or bryophytes, living and dead leaves, rabbit dung and inflorescences.
The specie is well distributed in Brazil, mostly in northeast region, it is present in Amazon, caatinga, savanna and Atlantic forest which have been losing its biological diversity due to deforestation, agricultural activities and urbanization.
Some of the records in Brazil are in unprotected areas.
More researches in Brazil are necessary, concernig field collection and moist chamber techniques using various types of substrate.
