    Description

    Seedling

Cotyledons small, 4-6 x 1-2 mm, ovate-elliptic, born on a short petiole, glabrous. Opposite primordial leaves, simple, elliptic, attenuated at both ends, sinuate-lobed, more or less elongated-petiolate, rosette-shaped, slightly hairy. The following leaves are sinuate-lobed with triangular segments, covered with abundant hair. The hypocotyl axis is practically non-existent. The seedling is light or dark green.

    Adult plant

Capsella bursa-pastoris is an annual, upright herbaceous plant. Stems are simple or branched, glabrous or bristling with simple, star-like hairs, reaching 50 cm in height. The basal leaves are rosette-shaped, sinuate-lobed or divided-lyrate, or bristling with simple, star-shaped hairs; the cauline leaves are entire, alternate, with entire or toothed margins, embracing the stem with wide auricles. Inflorescence in racemes of numerous, small, white or pinkish flowers. Fruit in the form of small triangular siliqua (Latin capsella = small box, an allusion to the shape of the siliqua), flattened, notched at the top. Seeds are small, less than 1 mm long.

          Reproduction

          Capsella bursa-pastoris multiplies by seed.
These seeds have an extraordinary germinative ecology: coated in a mucilage that swells in rainwater to become sticky, it attracts (chemotropism towards cellulose), captures, retains and then kills (via glucosinolates) arthropods (nematodes in particular) in the soil. The young seedling benefits from this "nutrient soup" by assimilating them, in a form of cryptocarnivory!

                Ecology

Central Africa: Capsella bursa-pastoris is a ruderal and polymorphous species, mainly found at high altitude, up to 2450 m.
Algeria: Capsella bursa-pastoris is a common species in the various annual and perennial crops in the north of the country, as confirmed by the profusion of vernacular names. Prefers marly and clayey, damp and salty soils.
Brazil: Capsella bursa-pastoris is found locally in tropical zones at high altitudes, and more frequently in the southern region with its more temperate climate.
China: Capsella bursa-pastoris is found throughout China, along roadsides, in gardens, fields, waste ground and mountain slopes.
India: Naturalised in the Western Ghats (Kerala) and locally cultivated.
South Africa: Capsella bursa-pastoris thrives in disturbed areas and dry grasslands. It is a widespread weed in crops, reputed to spoil milk and dairy products. Roadsides, pavements, lawns.

                  Origin

Capsella bursa-pastoris is native to Mediterranean regions, the whole of Europe and northern Asia.

                  Worldwide distribution

This species has now become cosmopolitan in regions with a subtropical or temperate climate.

                  Algeria: Common throughout the country.

                    Local harmfulness

Algeria: Capsella bursa-pastoris is a secondary "weed". It has an average ecological range but does not constitute an agronomic constraint due to its limited abundance. However, it can be used as an indicator of regional ecological conditions. Due to its wide distribution, it is a species to be monitored in the event of changes in the context, such as a change in the cropping system, which could lead to an upheaval in the inter-specific competition relationships.
Brazil: Capsella bursa-pastoris is an invasive weed, especially in the southern region of Brazil, with a strong capacity for competition and the ability to infest large areas, thanks to its enormous seed production.

                      Uses

Food: The leaves of Capsella bursa-pastoris make a slightly pungent (glucosinolate) country salad, harvested from October to March, which should not be eaten by people taking medication containing a monoamine oxidase inhibitor.
Animal feed: The seeds are actively sought after for breeding caged birds.
Medicinal: The plant is also an excellent haemostatic for the treatment of bleeding in women. As such, it is still used by herbal midwives in the United States.

                        Local control

Algeria: Weeding is particularly effective against Capsella bursa-pastoris. Also controlled using pre-emergence herbicides such as 2,4 D, or post-emergence herbicides such as bentazone, diuron, pendimethalin, propyzamide, sulfosulfuron, etc.
