I found this very bristly and brightly coloured moth caterpillar on my green recyling bin.
It is called the Vapourer (Orgyia antiqua), and it feeds on various broadleaved trees and bushes.

Wow, he’s got a lot going on with all those bristles and colors. Not very good camouflage for traversing a green hunk of plastic.

Yes, it did stand out. The birds know those long bristles could cause them problems so they tend to leave them be.

Nice shots, Pete. I had to, yes had to, look for the adult to see if it was as colorful and it is. Often the larva is more attractive and the adult plain but not in this case. We do have that species here with it being called a Rusty Tussock moth.

We have a similar one that feeds on oak leaves in spring: the live oak tussock moth (Orgyia detrita). I’ve photographed ours; that’s why I recognized yours at first glance. One of these days I’ll post is photo and link back to this blog so people can compare them if they like.

Great colours! I wouldn’t wear it around my neck 🙂 A pity I hardly see any caterpillars and especially not these hairy guys.

I don’t often see many caterpillars. Usually it is just a lucky spotting, or a rescue from the green recyling bin 🙂
