Scientific Name: Cladrastis kentukea
Description: American yellowwood is a wonderful mid-sized shade tree, reaching 30 to 50 feet in height and width. Its smooth, gray bark resembles that of beech trees, while its common name refers to the color of its freshly-cut wood. A member of the legume family, American yellowwood bears fragrant, white flowers in pendulous clusters reaching 8—14” in length. The tree is relatively low-branching with a broad, rounded habit.
