Spearmint (Mentha spicata)

If you love mint oils but find Peppermint essential oil a little overpowering then you might like to try Spearmint. It is the menthol that makes mint oils smell ‘minty’ and the high concentration of menthol in Peppermint oil can sometimes make this oil little fierce (I would say ‘fiery’ but it is more of an intense cooling effect really!). In contrast, although the essential oil of Spearmint (Mentha spicata) does contain menthol, the concentration is negligible in comparison to that of Peppermint. Instead its main component is carvone which is gives a much milder, sweeter fragrance.

In therapeutic terms Spearmint oil is also a milder and gentle alternative to Peppermint. It shares many of the same characteristics and uses but it is a safer alternative for sensitive skin and younger or older people. Some ideas for using spearmint:

  • diffuse on a warm day to refresh and uplift
  • dilute in a carrier and use as a rub for sprains and strains, sore joints and muscles
  • blend with a little Roman Camomile or Lavender for insect bites and itching
  • dilute appropriately and apply to the abdomen to relieve discomfort
  • pop a drop on the temples for headaches
  • add to a cream for a refreshing foot rub
  • inhale to gently clear a blocked nose or sinuses
  • add a drop to an unscented moisturiser to cool acne outbreaks

Above all, Spearmint Oil just smells delicious. With its uplifting, stimulating aroma it is a perfect oil to pep you up if you are lacking energy or enthusiasm.
