Museo Soumaya

This was a beautiful museum filled with artwork, sculptures, historical trinkets and more! I went on a Sunday and got to explore every floor of the building for free admission. A lot of the artwork was repetitive however, for example, there was a whole floor were the paintings primarily depicted Virgin Mary and with a child. This made the experience feel a bit uninspired at times.

However, I wouldn't discount the overall experience of the museum. If you are looking for something to do in Polanco on a Sunday, I'd recommend checking out Soumaya.

This is a must visit even if you just check it out from the outside. The building itself is sooo cool from the outside and we spent about an hour just sitting outside on the steps admiring it.

On the night that we visited, they had a viewing going on for one of the sculptures that was being presented. Security was at the door and we had to go through a metal detector.

The inside was interesting but too plain for me.. We went upstairs and we weren't really feeling the vibe of what was being presented. Overall though, everything was well taken care of and clean. There is a gift shop on the first floor but everything was pricey.

This museum is FREE, and it's open on Mondays when most museums and tourist attractions are closed in Mexico City.

The building itself if Mexico City's most identifiable buildings - it's shaped as a rotated rhomboid (I had to Google that) with an exterior flanked by hexagonal mirrored-steel tiles. And the museum spans six floors, home and host to a collection of 66,000 works from across the world and spanning 30 centuries. We spent about two hours roaming each level; I can't remember everything I saw (there was simply soooo much). I do wish the gift shop had a better selection of posters - such a missed opportunity to sell Museo Soumaya-branded prints.

Stopping here wasn't high on our list, but I'm so glad we went. It is open on Mondays while most other museum-like attractions in CDMX are closed.

The building itself is a spectacle to see in person. Upon entering we encountered a Diego Rivera mosaic piece. I'm not an art history expert, but the museum had 6 levels of sculptures and paintings from all over the world. We encountered Monet, Picasso, Degas, Salvadori Dali, Renoir, Matisse, and Rodin just to name a few.

You ascend the floors of the museum by elevator or by walking up the stark white wide flat ramp like halls that twist around the building.

The museum was free to enter. Definitely try to fit this in if you're in CDMX.

One of the highlights of our trip to Mexico City was the Soumaya Museum, a hexagon-shape aluminum-tiled exterior, which housed a vast collection of beautiful artwork, paintings, sculptures, murals of sorts, etc. by famous artists from different eras. The museum is easily accessible thru spiral staircases/walkway from top to bottom so be prepared to walk! Best of all, it's FREE to the general public. A must-visit!

Museo Soumaya is a tale of two museums. If you love design, the outside is unique. It's an interesting shape and there are no windows except for an opening to let the sun in at the very top. You enter and take a spiral pathway to the very top passing European art.

The inside is full of European art and sculptures. If you're into that, this is your place. I personally am not and found it a little boring. Such old art doesn't really match the design of the building.

Admission is free so it's worth a visit to see if you like it or not. If not, walk across the street to the Museo Jumex, a modern art gallery also with free admission.

Just Go! Don't think about it as there is nothing to contemplate.

3. Backpacks will need to be checked at the locker
4. There are 7 floors. Each floor has a different theme
5. There are restrooms on each floor and an elevator if you are not able to walk or climb the steps during your visit.
6. TAKE YOUR TIME and ENJOY EVERY EXHIBIT
7. Check out the gift shop, it's not as ridiculously expensive as you would think.

I could spend a day every week at SouMaya and lose myself easily. It's a gem that should be treasured by all.

Free museum that you can't miss in Polanco, CDMX. There is security at the front, but all they do is check your temp and bag and you're through.

Located in perhaps Mexico City's most affluent neighborhood Polanco, Soumaya is a modernist art museum filled with various ivory carvings, art sculptures, and other riches in it's 3 level building. Its striking design of a curved exterior and white inner walls makes this spot stand above the rest, even if its surrounded by the same brutal modern architecture of glass and concrete.

As for the experience I liked it! It's fully Air conditioned which is great on a hot day and never felt too crowded entering at 10am. After noon though the line filled up fast so definitely get here before the lunch crowd.

Overall it was nice and would recommend going at least once if you're shopping or staying in Polanco in an Airbnb.

This museum has free entry to the public. The architecture of the building itself is a must see. The white interior adds so much character. The walls and ceiling are white from floor to floor. As we came in, we were directed to a section where we were to check in our bags and water bottles. This first floor is a large open space area with a few large exhibits that caught the attention of the visitors. There is also a souvenir shop in this same floor. We walked up from floor to floor through a spiraled walkway ramp situated around the perimeter of the structure. In the center, at each floor, we found so many collections ranging from coins to artwork to sculptures.

So much to see here it is well worth the visit. And the best part was it was free. Levels and levels of amazing priceless artwork.
