Abstract
Valerian is a medicinal plant with a long tradition in Central Europe and is used worldwide. Its dried root stock is used for sleeping disorders and restlessness and must contain >0.4% essential oil content and >0.17% valerenic acids. The species comprises several subspecies with di-, tetra- and octoploid cytotypes. Valerian is a robust perennial plant. The root stock of vegetative plants is harvested in the autumn of the first growth year. Flowering is induced by vernalization; a protocol for controlled induction has been developed. The protandric flowers are self-fertile within the inflorescences; however cross-pollination predominates under panmictic conditions. Male sterility exists, but sterile plants are not available for public use. Tissue culture starting from early-stage inflorescence buds is used for micropropagation of shoots. All varieties of valerian, bred for pharmaceutical purpose, are tetraploid and open-pollinated populations. Despite the tetraploid level, valerian is highly susceptible to inbreeding depression. Hybrid breeding using the high natural cross-pollination rates is at its beginning.
