Bagworm moths, family Psychidae, total 1,001 known species, mostly Palearctic and African, with only 88 known for the New World; actual fauna likely (Fig. 5) exceeds 1,200 species. The family is now divided into six subfamilies, although various tribes are sometimes elevated as additional subfamilies: Lypusinae, Naryciinae, Taleporiinae, Penestoglossinae, Psychinae, and Oiketicinae (most of the subfamilies have also been treated as separate families in the past). The family is part of the superfamily Tineoidea, in the section Tineina, subsection Tineina, of the division Ditrysia. Adults minute to medium size (4–60 mm wingspan), with very rough head scaling; haustellum vestigial and naked; labial palpi reduced, 1 to 2-segmented but fused together (rarely 3-segmented); maxillary palpi; antennae usually bipectinate.
