here’s literally a clematis for every season of the year. In spring, you have the mesmerising fragrance of C. montana varieties and C. alpina’s delicate nodding flowers – both of which suit high walls and sturdy fences. Early summer-flowering clematis bring a bold splash of colour to obelisks and arches, followed later in the season by viticella clematis which produce a froth of dainty flowers. There are flowering clematis for winter, too, and evergreen clematis to give you attractive foliage cover all year round. You can grow clematis among flowering perennials and shrubs, such as foxgloves, peonies and penstemons, or combine them with other climbers – rambling roses and scented honeysuckle make perfect planting partners.

Every garden smells better with lavender. This evergreen herb brings long-lasting colour and scent in summer, and attracts bees and butterflies in droves
L
avender can be grown in so many ways. It looks fantastic with roses in a cottage-style garden, it makes a pretty low hedge, or it can be combined with other drought-tolerant Mediterranean plants (like rosemary, euphorbia and sedum) in a modern gravel garden. It will grow happily in a sunny pot or border and needs very little water. Better still, insects love the tiny pollen-rich blooms. You can infuse the flower-heads for a scented tea, sprinkle the petals over summer desserts, or make a potpourri. The blooms of French lavenders (Lavandula stoechas; 1-4, opposite) have ‘tufts’ of feathery petals, while English lavenders (Lavandula angustifolia; 5-10, opposite) are hardier, with slim, dense flower spikes.

Simple steps to a lovely lawn Giving your lawn a makeover now is a quick and easy way to improve the whole look of your garden. Just follow our step-by-step guide

STEP 1: FE ED AN D W E E D
Apply fertiliser now, using a handy spreader, to help your lawn grow stronger and greener in summer, or use a combined ‘weed and feed’ product to help tackle unwanted weeds and moss. Feed your lawn just before it rains, or sprinkle with a hose to help nutrients reach the roots. STEP 2: MAK E T H E F I R ST C U T
Set the mower blades at the highest setting, then gradually lower the blades for a closer trim. Cut your lawn about once a week in spring, and up to twice a week in summer, mowing until October. Create an eco-friendly lawn Encourage bees by letting lawn weeds, like clover, flower in between cuts

Use a scarifying rake or a lawn aerator to manually remove moss, or apply a time-saving moss-remover product. This will boost your lawn’s health, and improve how it looks and feels. STEP 4: F I L L T HE G AP S
Bald patches are easy to repair. Loosen the soil with a hand fork, remove any unwanted weeds, then rake gently to create a smooth surface. Scatter grass seeds or a patch repair product evenly, and water in gently. Protect from hungry birds with netting or fleece, pegged down firmly.
