The Notorious B.I.G.’s ‘King Of New York Crown’ & Tupac’s Love Letters Headed To Auction

Looks like The Notorious B.I.G.‘s “King of New York Crown” and Tupac‘s love letters from his teenage years are all headed to auction in New York City next month at international auction house Sotheby’s.

Bidders everywhere will now have the opportunity to vie for the crown both worn and signed by Biggie during the infamous 1997 photo shoot with Barron Claiborne, held just three days before his death in Los Angeles. The crown is estimated at $200,000 – $300,000.

Also on display will be 22 autographed love letters penned by a 15-17-year-old Pac to a high school sweetheart. The letters are estimated at $60,000 – $80,000 and even feature a namedrop of Jada Pinkett Smith. The letters, written in 1987-88 are to Kathy Loy, a fellow Baltimore School for the Arts student. In one of the letters, he writes her, “Jada told me she can see how much I love you.”

Biggie and Pac’s items are included in an archive of over 120 Hip-Hop related artifacts. All of the items will be auctioned off on September 15 as part of a series sold in the first-ever dedicated Hip-Hop auction at a major international auction house. Additionally, reservations are required for in-person viewing, but viewing will also be available to the public online via digital gallery.

Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby’s senior specialist who organized the sale, says, “The impact of hip-hop is everywhere — sneakers, clothing, jewelry, art, music. I wanted to have a sale that really recognized how massive that impact really is.”
