  • Size: Eastern hemlock is a large tree that can reach heights of 40 to 70 feet (12 to 21 meters) or more. It has a pyramid-shaped crown when young, becoming more irregular with age.
  • Leaves: The needles of Tsuga canadensis are short, flat, and approximately 1/2 to 3/4 inches (1.3 to 1.9 cm) long. They are arranged spirally on the twigs and have a distinctly two-ranked appearance.
  • Cones: The cones of eastern hemlock are small, about 3/4 to 1 inch (1.9 to 2.5 cm) long, and hang from the branches. The cones mature in the fall and release small winged seeds.
  • Bark: The bark of young trees is smooth and grayish-brown, while older trees develop furrows and become more deeply ridged.
  • Habitat: Eastern hemlock is typically found in moist, shaded forests, often near streams or on north-facing slopes. It prefers cool, humid climates.
  • Wildlife Value: The dense foliage of eastern hemlock provides valuable cover and habitat for various wildlife species. The seeds are a food source for birds and small mammals.

Care Instructions

Different plants have different watering needs. Check the soil moisture by inserting your finger about an inch into the soil. If it feels dry, water the plant until the water drains from the bottom of the pot. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.
