Summary[edit]

Description

Stemonitopsis typhina (F.H. Wigg.) Nann.-Bremek.

Image location: Big Thicket, Polk Co., Texas, USA

These were rowing on an old log in mixed woods in the Big Sandy Creek Unit.
Total height of ~ 4mm(stalk ~ 1mm)
Spores purple brown. Spores ~ 6.2-8.0 microns, round and moderately warted or spinulose, no reticulations.
Stemonitis nigrescens is a weak ID since the spores may be a little small and couldn’t find a lot of consistent information on these types of Slime Molds.
Edit ;

Steven Stephenson, the co-author of “Myxomycetes A Handbook of Slime Molds” suggested that Stemonitopsis typhina was a better possibility for these.

The spore size and ornamentation are also very close to what is reported in the handbook; “…faintly punctate with scattered clusters of dark warts, 6 to 8 micrometers in diameter.”

Used references: Stemonitopsis typhina was suggested by Steven L. Stephenson as a better possibility for these.
