| Description |
English: Common Butterwort (Pinguicula vulgaris). Though this plant was not in flower (the flower is generally purple), its leaves are very distinctive: they have rolled-up margins, and the upper surface can be seen to have an unusual texture. In fact, this is a carnivorous plant, and the upper leaf surface is covered with sticky glands which catch insects, whose soft parts are then digested.
This species is common in Ireland, and in the uplands of Wales, Scotland, and Northern England; it is rare elsewhere. It can be found in bogs and marshes. Wet rocks are another of its habitats, and it was in such a location that this specimen was found, growing from the slimy underside of a mini-waterfall; see 830985.
