Summary[edit]

Description
English: Aulacidea hieracii uses a wide range of host plant "micro" species in the genus Hieracium. This makes the identification of the host plant for each gall. This photograph was taken on the Isle of Mull where the Hieracium grows on old walls and rocks and is fairly distinctive because of the purple colour of the the underside of the leaves. It seems to have only rosette leaves. The gall is always found at the very base of the plant. There is very little option for the insects. Unless the plant is well off the ground the sheep and deer will ensure that the plant never has a flowering stem!
