Distribution: Occurring chiefly east of the Cascades crest in Washington; Alaska to California, east to the Atlantic Coast.

Habitat: Dry, open areas.

Flowers: April-June

Description:
General:

Pubescent annual, the stem usually freely-branched, 2.5-5 dm. tall.

Leaves:

Basal leaves in a rosette, 3-10 cm. long and 1-2 cm. wide, from simply serrate to pinnatifid with toothed segments, usually deciduous before flowering; cauline leaves alternate, reduced, mostly entire to toothed, linear.

Flowers:

Inflorescence of numerous, elongate, bractless racemes; pedicles about equal to the fruits, spreading; sepals 4, 1 mm. long; petals usually absent; stamens 2; style lacking.

Fruits:

Silicles obovate-oblong, strongly obcompressed, 2-3.5 mm. long, the tip slightly winged, slightly notched, glabrous to puberulent.
