This strong looking fly with the mesmerizing eyes is a member of Sciomyzidae, the marsh flies. (Possibly a Limnia sp., not really sure though.) Their larvae eat snails. Not sure what the adults like this one eat, but that sucker on the front looks perfect for slurping them out of shells.
Very nice. That’s about the weirdest looking fly I’ve ever seen, not that I’ve seen that many different ones. If the legs were positioned a little differently I think it would look like a horse; not a typical horse, but the idea of a horse.
I can kind of see the horse! Stalk-eyed flies, now those are weird looking flies. Weird looking anything really.
