Habitat

It breeds in deciduous forests with large trees, agricultural areas with copses, near rivers and lakes, in large parks. Preference for riparian trees (poplars, elms, willows). Shy and difficult to see well despite its bright colours. Tends to stay hidden in foliage and flies long distances quickly.

Description

Its scientific name comes from the Latin aurum, “golden”, “golden bird”. The male is unmistakable, golden yellow with bridle wings and black tail. Females and juveniles are greenish-yellow on the back, with whitish underparts streaked with dark. The bridle of females is dark grey. It has a strong and robust beak, of a red-pink colour.
