Chilopoda.
Centipedes are elongated metamric animals with one pair of legs per body segment. They have a varying number of legs from under 20 to over 300. They have an odd number of legs, never an even number. A key trait uniting this group is a pair of venom claws or forcipules formed from a modified first appendage. Some centipedes can be hazardous to humans because of their bite. Nonvenomous centipedes can be feared by humans because of their dozens of legs moving at the same time. A 19th century Tibetan poet warned his fellow Buddhists that "if you enjoy frightening others, you will be reborn as a centipede."
