Reynoutria sachalinensis

4. Reynoutria sachalinensis (F. Schmidt Petrop.) Nakai (syn.: Fallopia sachalinensis (F. Schmidt Petrop.) Ronse Decraene, Polygonum cuspidatum F. Schmidt Petrop.) (Sakhalin, N-Japan) – A locally naturalised and slightly increasing alien. Much more rare than Reynoutria japonica and their hybrid and probably often confused with the latter (see Meerts & Tiébré 2007). Known at least since 1924 (Wuustwezel) and now present in widely scattered locations. Well-represented in the surroundings of Brussel (although, at least in part, also confused with Reynoutria xbohemica; see Meerts & Tiébré l.c.), the Kempen and around Gent. Reynoutria sachalinensis usually grows in similar habitats like R. japonica and R. xbohemica (often together with one of both) but, its vigour in spite, apparently is less invasive in Belgium.

Additional information on the invasive behaviour of Reynoutria sachalinensis in Belgium and elsewhere in western Europe is available at: http://ias.biodiversity.be/species/show/144 and http://www.q-bank.eu/Plants/Factsheets/Fallopia%20sachalinensis%20NL.pdf.
