Honeyberry 'Kamchatka'
|
Ripens before strawberry, tastes better than blueberry.
Similar health benefits to blueberries and easier to grow as it does not require acidic soil. 'Kamchatka' is a late bloomer, good choice for areas with late spring frost danger. Can cope with wet soil but does best on well-drained soil. Mulching adds organic matter and keeps soil moist. Self-sterile so pollination partners are needed. After 3-4 years 3kg of fruit/year can be harvested up to 30 years. As its name suggests it is extremely winter hardy however the Japanese genome (Lonicera caerulea var. emphyllocalyx) is thought to be superior to the Russian varieties regarding taste and berry size. Breeding programs are being carried out in Canada and in several countries in Europe. A novel, promising crop; commercially grown in Russia from the the 50`s. High in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Can be used for pastry, jam, juice, wine, ice cream, yogurt, sauce and candy. Its flavour is similar to raspberry, blueberry, black currant or juneberry. The classification within the species is not settled. One classification uses nine varieties.:
