Carterocephalus palaemon is a circumboreal species widely distributed in temperate and subarctic zones of Eurasia and North America. It inhabits edges of mixed and deciduous forests, damp woodlands, and moist meadows. The upperside is dark brown or black with golden or orange spots; the underside is russet with black and whitish spots. The wingspan 20-32 mm. Adults feed on nectar, and the larva on grasses, including Bromus, Calamagrostis, and Molinia spp. One brood a year, May to late July.
