And second the proboscis is uncurling complete with droplets or particles from it's previous meal.

3 weeks from the orchid in full flower we now have just a last handful of petals at the top, here it is making seed.

Our one and only (and first that we know of) Common Spotted Orchid.
The spots appear on the leaves but we could not find even one. A web search suggests that the spots are very variable - from none to smothered even within a group of plants.
Maybe the spots are like Blackspot on Sycamore leaves - a infection that we don't have enough plants to have attracted yet. We will let this flower seed, transfer some of it (Orchid seed is apparently as fine as dust) & see what happens next year.

The detail on the petals is very intricate and quite variable.
The grainy image reflects the use of a Panasonic FZ100 as we didn't want to flatten the surroundings to get access by a 'better' camera.

This pair of coupled Common Sympetrum Dragonflies spent some time laying eggs in the adjacent pond & warming themselves in the sun on a patch of dry grass where they are surprisingly difficult to spot if you don't see them land.

This little patch of Convolvulus looks quite striking at the flowers open making a 5 pointed star.

The opening Convolvulus flower is drenched in dew.
No, we DIDN'T squirt it with a sprayer!

Each year we get a few out-of-season flowers.
This Convolvulus flower has definitely overslept.

Convolvulus flowers brighten up the ground at this time of year.
In about 1992 we had dug out 'Round Pond' but not yet lined or filled it, and it erupted with a carpet of thousands of these flowers right down to the bottom about 2 metres deep. We conclude that the soil must be 'saturated' with long-lived seeds awaiting their chance.

These Convolvulus flowers in shade of the northern bridleway hedge are the normal pinkish colour. Round the end of the hedge where the sun shines on the ground all day exactly the same species are sun-bleached completely white.

Many of the Convolvulus flowers seem to have been bleached by the sunshine with little trace of pink remaining.

White Convolvulus flower appear each year along one side of the east-west path across the centre of the meadow. This photo also caught a Marmalade Hover-fly making the most of the nectar.

Cow Parsley displays it's delicate flower head along the concrete track boarders - and a few days later all over the place.

We have been photographing a cowslip all year to make a 'sequence' but the seed heads are particularly attractive so here is the detailed image.

Along the Bridleway 200m to our East runs a deep (maybe 2m) drainage ditch. We caught this drift of yellow as we walked by, and a scramble half-way down the slope bagged this lovely splash of yellow Cowslips and Dandelions.

Craneflies all over the place, but perhaps not the invasion of some years. Here a pair doing what comes naturally down in the grass.

Judging from the wing pattern and larger size, this pair of Crane-flies seen mating is a different species we again have not identified.

A true sign of approaching Autumn is the appearance of Craneflies. This one is a 'whopper' practically filling the camera frame

The previous day we have seen a number of craneflies, so we decided to have a go at some of them in flight. Typically - all we could find was this unusually willing flier but with a leg missing.
