Both species frequently fly together. Diagnostic antennal tips - black beneath = lineola, orange all over = sylvestris.

Field notes and information

Currently this butterfly appears to be expanding its northern range, especially in the UK where in the last 20 years its range has exploded from Essex and a few other southern counties to cover most of the south.

Identification & Similar species: Very similar to the small skipper T. sylvestris and the two species are often found together. The underside of the antennal club is black in the current species vs golden brown.

Distribution & Flight: Widespread and common from north Africa to southern UK and southern Scandinavia. Single brooded from May to July or even August.

Habitat & Behaviour: Grassy places with flowers in diverse situations, such as forests, grasslands, agriculture, urban etc.
