Field notes and information

A widespread and often common species of woodlands, generally avoiding the driest places.

Identification & Similar species: The underside hindwing spots are distinctive. In flight it may resemeble (surprisingly!) the dusky large blue Maculinea nausithous which can share the same habitat.

Distribution & Flight: Northern Spain to north Greece and central Scandinavia. Flies from June to August.

Habitat & Behaviour: Grassy patches in forest/ woodland/ scrub or near ditches or other damp places which may be dry during the summer flight time.

It prefers sunny spots in woodland with shade or dappled sunlight. It loves bramble blossom and can often be found in good numbers feeding communally.

Variation: Highly variable, sometimes lacking spots.
