European White Elm / Spreading Elm - Ulmus laevis

 

Habitat

·        native to Europe

·        in the moderate belt of a northern hemisphere

Habit and Form

·        most commonly found along rivers

·        height and breadth of > 30 m

·        trunk < 2 m

·        The extensive shallow root system ultimately forms distinctive high buttresses around the base of the trunk.

Summer Foliage

·        deciduous, alternate, simple ovate with a markedly lop-sided base,

·        < 10 cm long and < 7 cm broad, comparatively thin,

·        often almost papery in texture and very translucent,

·        smooth above with a downy underside

Flowers

·        flowers bloom before the springing of the leaf buds

·        single-seeded acorn develops

·        In England, trees grown from seed flower in March.

Fruit

·        the crop of a fowl is

·        fruit is a winged samara

·        15 mm long by 10 mm broad with a ciliate margin

·        the single round 5 mm seed maturing in late spring

Bark

·        many insect races live in his tribe

Therapeutic effects:


The plant is also used to be described as herb; in one of its first modern botanical description.  It’s published in a medical plant lexicon from Matthiola in 1571. The author referring to Dioscorides, as he wrote that the tree bark dissolved in wine soothes the stomach.

A decoction made
​​from elm bark help to alleviate wounds, cough, sore throat, digestive disorders, and gynecological complaints.

The bark of tree dissolved in wine alleviates the gastric disorders.
