Scientific Description:

Stems to 70 cm, erect, usually branched above, eglandular or glandular pubescent or villous. Leaves narrowly oblong-lanceolate, 2.5 × 0.5−6 × 2 cm, crenate-dentate, with revolute margins. Flowers borne in upper leaf axils, forming compact or loose spikes. Bracts leaf-like, ovate, longer than flowers. Pedicels erecto-patent, 1−6 mm. Calyx c. 1.3 cm, in fruit becoming membranous and expanding to c. 2.2 × 1.7 cm; tube c. 1 cm long; lobes each with 2 triangular acuminate teeth. Corolla 17−22 mm; tube c. 1/2 length of corolla, narrowly cylindrical, slightly curved. Capsule 1.3 × 1.3 cm; seeds c. 5 × 4 mm.

 

Flowering time: June−August.

Habitat: Wet meadows, fields at forest edge, 1100−2300 m.

Public Description:

Rhinanthus angustifolius subsp. grandifloras, known as “greater yellow-rattle”, is native to temperate grasslands of Europe and West Asia. It is an annual herb with yellow flowers, and grows up to 70 cm in length. It blooms between June and August and is found in wet meadowd, fields at forest edge. The yellow flowers are mostly visited by bumblebees.
