Generally 40-60cm high, but sometimes much taller. Leaves three, narrowly sword-shaped, but blunt-tipped, about 35cm long. Flowers reddish to violet-purple, to about 6cm long, often in fairly dense spikes, summer. Central and eastern Europe, in wet meadows and scrub. G.i. var. kotschyanus, see G. kotschyanus.
