The Marsh Gentian tufted, with a few to several ascending to erect stems 20-30cm tall, sometimes less or more. Leaves linear to lanceolate, occasionally broader, 1.5-4cm long. Flowers 3-4cm long, funnel-shaped, blue to blue- purple with greenish lines on the tube, up to seven from the uppermost leaf axils, late summer. Throughout Europe but absent or rare in the extreme north and south, in wettish grassland, heathland and in bogs. G.p. var. alba has white, often smaller flowers, and G.p. var. depressa has prostrate to ascending stems; Styrian Form, is more robust and erect with paler flowers the latter (possibly no longer in cultivation).
