Conservation status. Vulnerable [VU D2].

Morphology and biology. Perennial acrocarpous moss. Tufts flat, greyish white, 0.5–1 cm high. Leaves ovate-lanceolate to obovate, narrowed at leaf base, widest above middle leaf part, concave, abruptly narrowed towards the point, and ending with long colourless hair-point. Nerve single, ending in leaf point, but smaller in lower leaves and disappears below the point. Sporophytes immersed in perichaetial leaves, slightly inclined, with longitudinal ridges when dry. Sporophyte stalk about 0.7 mm long, thin, S-shaped curve. Gemmae lacking. Bisexual.

Habitats and populations. Plants grow on dry rocks, usually calcareous, on old brick walls and concrete.

Distribution in Bulgaria. Northeast Bulgaria (near the town of Nevsha, Varna district; Shumensko Plateau, on calcareous rocks near the Osmarski Rocky Monastery).

General distribution. Balkan Peninsula (Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia) and other parts of Europe (Austria, Belgium, UK, Czech Republic, Slovakia, France, Germany, Switzerland, Slovenia, Spain, Italy, Poland, Baltic region), Caucasus, NE, E and SW Asia, N Africa. Sub-Mediterranean species.

Threats. Human settlements extend, industry, infrastructure extend, air pollution. Species locality is in area of active human impact.

Conservation measures taken. None.

Conservation measures needed. Long-term study, assessment of trends in habitat changes, prognosis for population development and identification of conservation measures based on this prognosis.
