Nicotiana tabacum L. tobacco

Herbaceous annual to about 2 m tall; leaves alternate, simple, elliptic, base cordate-clasping, margin entire, apex acute; flowers terminal and from upper nodes; corolla tubular; fruit a capsule. Image at left photographed in Cooperativa.

Originally from South America, tobacco is now cultivated throughout the world. Spontaneous individuals can be found in the vicinity of settlements, as at the camp area of Kiuic.
