W. K. FOSTER.
ERASIVE GUARD FOR WRITING PENGILS.
Patented June 1,1886.
I ventor 7 Wife r [1 00" 66 r minefie d". JUVI NITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo WALTER KITTREGE FOSTER, OF STONEHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
vERASIVE GUARD FOR WRITING-PENCILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,95 dated June 1386- Application filed April 5, 1886. Serial No. 197,841. (No model.)
resented in the accompanying drawings, of I Figures 1 and 2 are side views, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, of awriting-pencil guard of my invention, the nature of which is defined in the claim hereinafter presented. Fig. 4 is a side view, and Fig. 5 a longitudinal section, of a writing or lead pencil and the said guard applied to it, such guard having not only to serve the purpose of an eraser for removing from paper marks made thereon by a pencil, but to answer to protect and preserve from breaking the point or projecting portion of the lead of such pencil.
The said erasive guard A is made of indiarubber, vulcanized, or other suitable elastic erasive material, and has a tubular bore, which is conical or tapering in part, as shown at a, to fit to the conical or pointed portion 1) of the pencil B, and to extend back a short distance therefrom upon and to fit to the body of the pencil. The conical part of the bore extends and opens through the conical point e of the guard, the part (I of the guard directly in rear of the said point 0 being quadrilateral or prismatic, and from thence cylindrical or tapering, as represented at e. \Vhen in use, the lead fof the pencil extends through and a short distance beyond the tip of the point 0, which serves, by tightly grasping the lead, to protect its point and prevent it from being accidently broken. As the pencil-point may become worn down, the guard maybe crowded back upon the pencil, the elasticity of the guard readily admitting of such. The guard answers as an eraser or a means of rubbing out pencil-marks from paper or a surface. The flat parts of the sides of the guard may be' grooved transversely or otherwise, if desirable.
I do not confine my invention strictly to the form of the guard as represented, as it may be somewhat varied without materially, if any, changing its essential characteristics, which are the elastic tube, its erasive prism or part, and the tapering tubular projection or point, essentially as described. 5-
I would observe that after using the pencil the elastic guard may be slid forward thereon so as to entirely cover the writing-point, and thereby prevent it from being broken off in case of falling of the pencil upon afioor or the ground, or when the pencil is carried in the pocket of a person. The guard, by being prismatic, prevents the pencil from rolling off a desk or inclined surface when laid thereon. The guard strengthens the writing-point, espe- 6 5 cially when it is not properly glued to the wood of the pencil, and thereby prevents it from breaking off up within the wood.
I therefore claim As a new or improved article of manufac- 7'0 ture, the writing-pencil erasive guard, substantially as described, composed of the clastic tube, the erasive prism or part, and the tapering or conical tubular projection or point arranged and formed in one piece of india- 75 rubber or other suitable elastic erasive material, it being for use upon a pencil for the protection of its point and otherwise, as specified.
